- The 6th regular meeting of Korea-China maritime security agencies -

The Korea Coast Guard announced that Commissioner General Jong-wook Kim attended the 6th regular meeting of Korea-China maritime security agencies held in Qingdao, China, on June 13, 2023, and discussed efficient ways to strengthen maritime security and promote friendly cooperation with the Chinese Coast Guard.

Held every year since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Cooperation in 2015, the Korea-China maritime security agencies meeting was attended by 14 members of the Chinese Coast Guard this year, including Director Yu Zhong and other high-level officials.

Notably, this year, the two sides have decided to reinforce maritime cooperation in practical terms by holding working-level meetings annually from 2024 onward and activating liaison channels among local level organizations in order to facilitate rapid information exchange and interdiction of transnational maritime crimes such as drugs, smuggling and illegal immigration through the sea.

In addition, the two sides discussed joint patrols in the provisional area of the West Sea to ensure safe and peaceful fishing, as well as measures to ensure safe navigation of ships and personnel and the capabilities to respond to crises at sea.

Commissioner General Jong-wook Kim said he hoped the meeting served as an opportunity to take the bilateral relationship between the two organizations to the next level and foster a close partnership in order to build a cooperative partnership for safe and clean seas.
