- Strengthening Korea-Vietnam maritime security cooperation

The Korea Coast Guard (KCG) announced that it had a meeting with Vietnamese Minister of Public Security (MPS) Gen. Tô Lâm on April 7, 2023.

Serving as the Minister of Public Security since 2016, General Lâm pays his first visit to the KCG together with 16 high-ranking officials from the MPS, which is a public agency directly under the Vietnamese Prime Minister’s Office and has overarching responsibilities in such various areas as national intelligence service, police, fire prevention and immigration.

According to the KCG, the purpose of this visit is to discuss ways to promote partnership and cooperation between the two agencies in the area of territorial water and inland waterways management, as the Traffic Police Department under the MPS performs the function of public security and safety of the waterways and ports in the inland waters.

As part of his visit, General Lâm had a tour of a 3,000-ton class large vessel, 500-ton class medium-sized vessel, and 100-ton class patrol vessel in KCG’s Incheon Dock before meeting with KCG Commissioner General Jong-Uk Kim, and expressed great interest in the specifications and performance of the vessels.

During the meeting, KCG Commissioner General Kim shared information on the recent maritime security landscape of both Korea and Vietnam, and agreed on the challenges posed by the surge in transnational maritime crimes and the need for cooperation to tackle those challenges.

In recognition of the seriousness of the recent issue of synthetic drugs and drugs smuggled in large quantities by maritime routes, the two leaders also shared the view that international cooperation is urgently needed to detect and deter maritime drug trafficking channels.

Additionally, the heads of the two organizations agreed to strengthen bilateral maritime security cooperation building on the trust relationship that was enhanced to “comprehensive and strategic partnership” last year, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Korea.
