The Korea Coast Guard (KCG) announced that Andrew Joseph Tiongson, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Pacific Area Command, made an official visit to the KCG Headquarters on April 17th, 2023.

The USCG Pacific Area Command is USCG’s regional command element and force provider for maritime safety, security and stewardship in the Pacific, and the KCG and USCG have continued exchanges and cooperation in various fields such as education and training, search and rescue, and joint security.

The two organizations discussed areas of cooperation in line with the Indo-Pacific Strategy of the respective governments, and shared the view that transnational crimes, such as IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated) fishing and drug trafficking, necessitate close cooperation among relevant agencies.

Prior to his visit to the KCG, Commander Tiongson had a tour of a 3,000-ton vessel at the KCG’s Incheon Dock and learned about the operational assets and missions of the KCG.

In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the US-Korea alliance, the heads of the two agencies also agreed to further strengthen bilateral maritime security cooperation, building upon the cooperative partnership they have established.
